Colorado Sun Article

On December 30th, my sister, Sandra, was looking out her window at the smoke plumes in the sky from the wildfires that had begun that morning in her town of Superior, just outside of Boulder, Co. What she saw in addition to the smoke—the flames of the rapidly encroaching wildfire wall—saved her and her family’s lives. The winds were whipping at 110 mph and the fires were spreading the length of a football field within seconds.

She called 911, but the firefighters weren’t on the scene yet, as they didn’t seem to be aware yet that it had moved so quickly into her neighborhood. She only had minutes to react.

The kids were instructed to get in the car immediately. The family tried to round up their two beloved cats, but unfortunately, Verona and Freya are skittish rescues that took off because they were frightened.

The family got in the car and began driving through the smoke to get out of danger as quickly as possible. Two of her kids didn’t even have time to grab their shoes and coats…they just ran for the car.

Driving out of harm’s way, they were directed to an evacuation site, where they spent much of the day and into the night until they were relocated to a hotel. They’re being put up in the hotel for two nights (yesterday and today).

In the meantime, we have learned that the home she had leased and was living in is completely gone. All of their belongings…food, clothing, shoes, coats, photos, memorabilia…everything…is just ashes now. The entire neighborhood wiped off the earth within a couple of hours.

They will now have to rebuild their entire lives from scratch.  After relocating to Boulder only two years ago from Albany, NY, the home they were leasing is completely gone and they now have nothing.

And to make matters even worse, the kids have lost everything…in such a traumatic way…including their new Christmas presents. I’m absolutely devastated for them. Living in Averill Park, NY…1600 miles away doesn’t give me the opportunity to do much.

But one thing I can do is I can help try to locate their missing kitties, and I also realized I can ask my friends and family, would you possibly please help my sister out? When your whole life is wiped away in a matter of hours, even a dollar matters.

Over 600 families have been displaced overnight. The housing shortage just got much worse in Boulder…and although they are unsure at the moment of their next steps, they may even have to find housing out of state, so they would need funds to travel to wherever they are able to go.

Any money raised will go directly to my sister’s family to help them with clothing, food, shelter, and possibly travel to relocate. If anyone is able to help, it would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!!!
