If World Water Week 2018 was anything to go by, it would be a pity for us to miss it this year. Tshepi and Keitumetse have once again been invited to serve as World Water Week assistants and we are more than eager to see familiar faces. This is a kind request to contribute to our accommodation and travel costs for World Water Week 2019.
Our story is somewhat the modern-day female empowerment romance. Having met for the first time at World Water Week last year, we have continued to keep in close contact, supporting each other’s goals with ultimately the same vision-to make a mark within the water sector. We count each other fortunate to share this kind of friendship.
Tshepiso: I have recently graduated from Lund University and hold a Master’s in Water Resources Engineering. I have continuously been working with greywater as a beneficial water resource alternative, especially in non-sewered areas. I have come to understand that the health and environmental risks of reusing greywater in households are better managed in urban homes, but it is households in non-sewered areas that would benefit most if these risks were mitigated. I believe the well-intended campaign WASH is non-inclusive and should transform to WASH(ED). Where WASH(ED) would include the management of domestic wastewater and possible reuse in water-scarce regions. Considering this and the thematic scope of this year there is no doubt that I will make the best out of this year’s conference.
Keitumetse: From the University of Gothenburg, I am Master in Ecotoxicology recent graduate. Although I am passionate about all things aquatic ecotoxicology, my attention has been drawn by the rapid growth of nano-materials and general generation of domestic waste. Coming from a country that has no standardised landfill, I embarked on a journey to find what efficient yet effective nanomaterials can be used to remediate landfill leachate before it reaches any water resources which potentially pose threats to the aquatic environment. As the WWW theme stipulates “Water for society-including all”, I believe the “all” includes the aquatic environment. While deliberations are on-going and policies drafted for society, awareness should be constantly made about the effects anthropogenic activities have on the aquatic environment and it is at this water week that I would like to contribute on issues of constant aquatic environment inclusion.
We need to book soon as the date draws near.
This would mean a lot to us. With this being our final academic year in Sweden, who knows how fortunate we will be in future to make it to the next World Water Week?
