The Beauty of Haiti

It's been over a year since I have seen the beautiful people of Haiti and I am thrilled to be returning on January 27th to visit and work with the wonderful organization The Haitian Health Foundation to bring medical care, housing and food to the people of Jeremie.
Since my last visit , Hurricane Matthew laid waste to Jeremie and destroyed much of the work that had been so painstakingly achieved over the many years HHF has been working in the region. I will be returning to Haiti close to the 10 year anniversary of the earthquake that also cruelly took the lives and livelihood of so many Haitian survivors, many of whom still have yet to get back on their feet.
It seems that the Haitians are locked in a pattern of trial and struggle. But it is my guess that when I return, I won't hear complaints or bitterness., but rather be greeted with (as I have always been) smiles, friendly gestures and genuine gratitude for our visit and help.
The Haitians are a resilient people, they are strong and authentic and joyful regardless of the hand they have been dealt. During my trip, I will work beside many Haitians who have received a well-deserved and hard earned leg up through training and employment opportunities made possible by the HHF programs. I am proud to work by the side of these smart and caring individuals who have chosen a career path of helping their fellow country men, women and children get housing, education and healthcare.
The work is tough (emotionally and physically) and humbling, yet extremely rewarding, motivating and joyful. If only every person could experience the beauty of Haiti and the Haitian people, it would become so clear as to why I return each year and how very inaccurate many cynical people are in their description of this amazing country.
