The Battle for Deptford is a documentary about a beloved community wildlife garden and a block of council homes in south east London, which are threatened with demolition as part of a regeneration scheme, and the residents' and local people's fight to save them for the good of their community.
As Lewisham Council, push through prejudged plans to sell the land, demolish the garden and homes, and build new flats, the Save Reginald! Save Tidemill! campaign call to get the plans for the development redrawn, so Tidemill Garden and Reginald House can be saved.
Ignored and treated with contempt throughout the development's consultation, and not represented by their councillors, campaigners take the Council to court, hold big, public demonstrations, and occupy the garden, making national news. The Council respond by sending in 120 bailiffs to violently evict them, supported by police, and installing 24 hour security around the site, at huge cost.

I, filmmaker Hat Vickers, have been following the campaign over the last year, from demonstrations, to daily life in the occupation, to the eviction. I want to create a feature-length documentary on the story of this development and gentrification in Lewisham, called The Battle for Deptford.
As well as footage of key events, the documentary will feature interviews with the main people involved. It will show why local people have fought so long and hard to keep their homes and the wildlife garden. It will look at how important natural spaces, community spaces, and safe, secure homes are to our wellbeing, families and cultures. And it will examine what it means to be a community, and how regeneration of our city is pulling us apart.
I need your help to make this happen.
I am fundraising to be able to pay myself a basic wage whilst I finish the film. The money will also go towards hiring a camera operator to assist with shooting the interviews, and for an illustrator to help with the design. The rest of the budget is for film festival submissions and to put on screenings.
Everyone who supports the documentary will be invited to a local screening.
