Gaza Baker

My name is Ibrahim Abu Hany. I am known as the Baker of Gaza. I recently had an article written about me by NPR called “Cake in the time of war, in Gaza.” You can find the article here:

I was co-owner of Batool Cakes, a professional bakery with three branches throughout Gaza, and despite the loss of our livelihood, I still tried my best to bring joy to the beloved people of Gaza. Gaza is full of people whom are resilient and love life, so I wanted to continue to bring happiness, despite our circumstances.

I have a beautiful family that consists of 10, including myself, my wife Rasha, our talented and loving daughters, Sulaf, 14 and Sama, 12 as well as our beloved sons, Adam, 10, and Youssef, 7. This is in addition to my mother, 74, my sister Aisha and her children Retaj, 6, and Muhammad, 5.
I have launched this GoFundMe campaign with a goal of 70000€ to ensure the safety and facilitate the evacuation of my immediate family (10 members) in Gaza. To maintain transparency, I have detailed the breakdown of the estimated total costs for your understanding.

• Evacuation Fee/Egyptian coordination: 35000€

• Issuing passports + Transfer fees (between currencies: URO-USD + Western Union fees): €3000

• Living expenses and Rent in Egypt for 2 families: 10,000

• Initial costs for return, repair and rework. 20,000€

• GoFundMe Fee: €2,000 (Approximately 2.9% of each donation)

Unfortunately just one day after publication of the article, our bakery in Khan Younis was destroyed. We are devastated. I still want to continue bringing joy through baking but, I must consider the safety of my family first.

Before the war, we all lived in one home. However, since the war, we were forcibly displaced from our family home and are now living separately.

The bakery was our dream and livelihood. It took us years to build. We put our sweat and tears to build a future for ourselves and our children. It pains me to see my children and my family now suffering at the loss of our businesses and having to be forcibly displaced from one another. My only wish is to evacuate my family temporarily for their safety and return to Gaza to rebuild the Bakery, All I’ve ever wished was for my children to achieve their dreams and to also heal.

As you are probably aware, the costs to evacuate are extremely high. We need your support my friends. Thank you for your support.
