My name is Theresa Vereline. I'm going to be walking the NYC Marathon this Sunday Nov. 3 2019. I'm hoping to raise money for my foundation, Verelinefoundation.org. Please read my story and help me reach my goal.
I was asked , by my sister, if I would attend an open house at her school. She wanted me to see if there was anything from a handicap position that needed to be changed or added ( I'm paralyzed from the chest down ).
The bathroom stalls were plenty wide enough for my wheelchair and bars were at the right height. Toilet paper and paper towels were in good location. The hallways and doors were clear and wide enough. The cafeteria was ok. A child sitting in the wheelchair will have difficulty in seeing what is being served. They did have an aid to help with carrying the tray to the table and setting everything up. What I liked was that I could sit at any table. They were all high enough for me to get my legs under.
Recess time: The kids can't wait to get out the door and get fresh air. It's not the same for those that are not able bodied. In this case, the children are brought down to the nurses station and given a choice of reading a book or coloring. In order for these children to go out and play, the school district would have to build a handicap play ground so the insurance would cover them. It is very difficult for struggling school districts to spend money on a play ground when they can't afford teachers.
So that is what I'm hoping to help with the Verelinefoundation.org. Now when a challenged child expresses an interest in a sport, the parent can contact us. We can help guide them to a location where the sport is being played. Help them sign up, and even help with fees and equipment.
Eventually the Verelinefoundations goal is to put play grounds, for the handicapped, at the local schools.
The Verelinefoundation.org has raised money by doing bake and craft sales. We are not able to raise enough money to keep up with the request. Please help us in any way you can.
