The Art and Life of Danny Allen - Four Partnered Exhibitions

First a big thank you to all those who have donated. We are humbled by the support of our and Danny's friends, family and community. If you have donated but not claimed a prize, there are still gifts available (updated list shown below) and if you are interested in contributing, there is still time to donate and receive a gift.

The project has grown to add a fourth exhibition at Axom Gallery and Exhibition space, and excitingly we received a loan of one of Danny's most well known pieces, "Sunny Ducks" from the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery, which will be showcased at Axom. We are extending our fundraising campaign to the end of March as we anticipate a greater need for funds due to the continuous growth of this project. Thank you all for your support!

“The Art and Life of Danny Allen” is a retrospective exhibition of his life’s art work, partnered with four notable fine arts organizations in a simultaneous cooperative effort. All four galleries will exhibit different, but complimentary aspects of Danny Allen’s art.

The partnered exhibits begin on First Friday, February 2nd, 2018 starting with the Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo) and Gallery Q of Rochester’s Out Alliance. Both gallery openings are on February 2nd, and are walking distance from each other. The second set of retrospectives include the Mercer Gallery of Monroe Community College (MCC) opening on Thursday March 1st, 2018—and lastly, the AXOM Projects and Gallery in Rochester NY. All four exhibits of Danny Allen’s artworks are centered around “It Gets Better Campaign” for youth at risk for suicide.

Daniel "Danny" Allen was a largely self-taught artist who lived in Rochester, NY in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Allen's work had a profound influence on the regional cultural scene. He was openly gayand was one of the first artists to address this issue in his work. Allen worked in a variety of mediums producing drawings, sketches, paintings, collages and assemblages. He dealt with the feelings of joy, guilt, pressure to conform and his confusion in how to bring all the different aspects of himself.

The exhibition “Danny Allen and His Friends” presented by Mercer Gallery of MCC will also include the work of Kathy Calderwood, Bill Whiting, Juliana Furlong Williams, Eva Weiss, Antonio Petracca, Steven Plunkett, Ramon Martinez, Yvonne Cupolo and Albert Robbins. All of these artists knew Mr. Allen and out of respect for his art and his era, they will show work that they made in the late 60s and early 70s. Mercer Gallery will also have a public panel discussion about their interactions with Danny and give candid accounts of their reactions to his suicide. During the Allen Retrospective, Bill Whiting will give a talk based on his book "An Early Work Late in Life - The Life and Art of Danny Allen", which he wrote following the discovery of one of Allen's exquisite surrealist miniatures lost in the archives of the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery. It was included in their exhibition “Discovery’s From the Vaults”. The funds raised from this “GoFundMe” campaign will help to pay for materials, art preparation, framing, printing, travel expenses for the artists, a project coordinator and promotion expenses.

This Just In: Greats News! The Art and Life of Danny Allen Project just received a matching grant from the William Penn Foundation! Thank you so much for your support in keeping Danny's legacy alive and strong.
