"In my professional lifetime, I have witnessed the transformation of the top of the world from a beautiful ice-bound expanse of wilderness to a region now characterized by warming and melting on all fronts. These changes represent a spiritual impoverishment of the earth, as well as a practical catastrophe for humanity. " Peter Wadhams , Ocean Physics, Cambridge University
The money I am trying to raise here, is the remaining 25% of costs which I need to pay for my place on an Arctic expedition. This research trip is an opportunity to witness this multi-vocal landscape alongside the immediate impact of global warming. By contributing to this project, you are supporting me to create art about the accelerating climate and ecological crisis. Thank You.
Project outline: In October 2021 I will travel overland by train to Oslo, Norway and then get a flight to Longyearbyen in Svalbard. Once in Svalbard I will join an international group of artists and scientists, then we set sail for 20 days into the High Arctic. During the residency I will transcribe a Private Weather Diary written onboard a voyage to the Arctic in 1851 and I will also create my own Private Weather Diary in the Arctic. This is the research and development phase of a new two year project about extreme weather, based in the High Arctic and the Somerset Levels.
