The Alba Vital Scan Project

Please visit: www.albamedicalsciences.scot for full details of the project.

Its a very sad fact that one in five of Covid-19 patients are healthcare workers.

Whenever someone arrives at a hospital, they must have a "vital signs" health assessment which in the case of a highly contagious virus, exposes the NHS staff to a high risk of infection because there needs to be direct physical contact between them and the patient in order to attache various monitoring devices.

Our project aims to develop The Alba Vital Scan technology, which will be capable of capturing all of a persons vital signs  remotely (using non-contact optical sensors) and to determine (via algorithms) that persons state of health.

This means that both the patient and healthcare workers can be kept in separate safe  spaces while a doctor holds a consultation (via an iPad or similar) and determines if isolation is essential and how best to manage that persons care.

Our project will be undertaken within the NHS Ninewells Hospital, Dundee and it is due to start in January 2021 with completion by December 2021. We have the support of senior clinicians, medical physics and specialists from Dundee, Abertay and St Andrews Universities along with a number of  volunteers willing to take part in the various technology development trials.

It will be necessary to acquire some very specialist equipment and to undertake the development and production of enhanced imaging devices, sensors etc. New algorithms will be needed to process the non-contact measurement data and a remote mobile (robotic) unit  will be produced to house all of the kit.

We are raising the money to do all of this without needing to ask the NHS for funding as their budgets have been severely affected by the cost of Covid-19

We are confident that the project can be delivered within the total budget that we are seeking to raise and hope that most folk who love the NHS will consider making a donation to support this effort to help keep them safe, as we all face-up to the challenge of Covid-19 and the possibility of having to deal with even more serious pandemics in future.

The more we can do to protect NHS healthcare workers from exposure to contagious illnesses, the more we are supporting them to deliver safe, effective care at a time when  everyone involved is under unprecedented pressure.

Please help us succeed , we all know  those amazing folk in the NHS deserve it
