The 2020 Sadie T. M. Alexander Conference

Economics has a diversity problem. Every year, universities award less than 1 percent of Economics PhDs to African Americans and less than 30 percent to women.
By empowering and equipping Black women in quantitative sciences, the Sadie Collective addresses the pipeline and pathway problem in economics, finance, data science, and public policy through curated content creation, programming and mentorship.
Founded by Anna Opoku-Agyeman and Fanta Traore, The Sadie T. M. Alexander Conference for Economics and Related Fields aims to bring together Black women in the nation's capital and take advantage of its location as epicenter of the American economic policy debate to hear from established and emerging economists/public policy (on the economics track) scientists through panelist sessions, learn from each other during workshops, and knock down doors via networking opportunities throughout the weekend. Students majoring in public policy, mathematics, and/or statistics with an interest in graduate studies are strongly encouraged to attend along with Black women professors, professionals, and the like.
With 100 attendees from over 30 institutions across the world and 13 career recruiters, the inaugural conference in 2019 made national headlines as the first conference for Black women in economics and related fields. Hosted by Mathematica's Washington DC office, attendees came together to discuss their experiences, share strategies for success, and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Sadie T.M. Alexander, the first Black woman to be awarded a Ph.D. in economics and the second woman to receive a Ph.D. overall in the United States. Our guests of honor included the daughter of Sadie Alexander, Dr. Rae Alexander-Minter, and extended family.
We are continuing to curate this history by holding this conference for it’s second year in February of 2020!
This year we’re excited to partner with students from Wakefield High School, in Virginia to enable the participation of 20 young women from low income backgrounds to attend the conference. With your support the young women will be exposed to leading Black women in the quantitative profession and participate in a curated mentor matching program.
Give to introduce a young high school student to learn more about economics and hear from the likes of Chair Janet Yellen, and established Black women economists:
$20 to cover a high school student’s transportation to and from the conference
$50 to cover a high school student's registration fee
$100 to cover a high school student’s food
$200 to cover a high school student’s lodging
All additional funds raised will go towards general costs surrounding the needs of the Sadie Collective, to create a sustainable pipeline and pathway for Black women in economics.
