Thankful, I am Able Social circus for Uganda children with disabilities!

Are you thankful that you are able?
Would you please join our Thankful Crusade of bringing circus art into the lives of children with special needs, and transforming societal perceptions and support for persons with disabilities in Uganda?

We at HICCUP Circus Uganda (HCU) have partnered with Katalemwa Cheshire Home for Rehabilitation Services (KCH) to bring circus art to children with physical and developmental needs. Uniquely HCU, we draw our performers from the population representing our social education messaging including youth from low-income neighborhoods(city slums), juvenile detentions, refugees, and school children. This time HCU will engage children with special needs as performers of social messages concerning people with disabilities in line with KCH’s mission of “Rising Above Disability.” Our mission is to normalize awareness that people with special needs are not disabled; they are differently-abled!

HCU plans to train children at KCH in human circus art and prepare them to perform for varied audiences within Uganda. As circus performers, children with disabilities will discover their untapped potential and showcase their talent publicly, In turn countering social stigma about disabilities, increasing public awareness about people with special needs, and advocating for an inclusive society. It is estimated that 12% of the Uganda population are people with disabilities, of whom 5.8% (or 2,027,148) or children. HCU and KCH community and families are excited about the potential impact of this initiative, the first time engaging children with special needs in circus art for social change.

Your Thankful I am Able gift will contribute toward the success of this initiative by recruiting and training KCH children as human circus performers. First and foremost, our resident performers will stage one or two shows for the KCH community, a vivid display of how HCU spreads our social education circus messaging. Together with KCH management, we will select an inclusive group of children to perform from the diverse special needs/disabilities at the rehabilitation home.

HCU has already raised part of the funding required for this initiative through the generous support of the Fondazione Museke di Brescia in Italy. We are looking for at least USD8,000 to facilitate a professional circus teacher with experience working with children with disabilities. Funding will also enable us to perform at KCH, and to the general public at the Uganda National Theater, and in schools. Any additional funding collected will go toward KCH’s rehabilitation programs.

Thank you for being Thankful!

About Hiccup Circus Uganda (HCU)

HCU is an educational, entertaining, and itinerant social circus community-based organization that uses circus performed by youth, not animals, to raise awareness about salient social issues and promote education and public advocacy. Circus art can be an effective medium for fostering values leading to inclusive growth and peaceful coexistence, by combining creative art with social campaigns. HCU’s main target groups are underrepresented and marginalized groups including primary/secondary schools, youth centers, refugee settlements, unprivileged at-risk youth living in slums, juvenile detentions, and children with disabilities.
