Caring for Cathy

Donation protected
At the beginning of July, life changed for our family.  My sister-in-law, Catherine Smith Luxmore, had unexpected surgery to remove a brain tumor.  Within days, she was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Cancer...it’s a tough pill to swallow, especially for a 47 year old single mom of three teenagers, Sarah (17), Jack (16), and Ben (14).

As Cathy stated in her Facebook post, this has been a core shaking experience for all of us.  However, since her diagnosis, my family has been overwhelmed by the love and support we’ve received from far and wide.  Your genuine love, gracious encouragement, and more importantly, your prayers have lifted our spirits in ways that words can’t merely convey.  Through your love and prayers, God has provided constant comfort and strength, and He is carrying us through this unexpected journey. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for lifting our spirits and for loving us in the kindest way.

This past Friday, my husband, Andy, flew with his sister, Cathy, to MD Anderson in Houston.  MD Anderson is regarded as the world’s best cancer center, so it’s no surprise that Andy insisted on the best for his sister.  In typical Andy fashion, he worked his magic and secured an appointment within a week. Yesterday, MD Anderson recommended 6 weeks of chemotherapy and radiation treatments to be administered in Houston.  Although the doctor’s wanted Cathy to start sooner, she will not begin treatment until August 13. She continues to have a peaceful state of mind and is determined to beat the odds, but she’s going to need our help.

As Cathy clearly stated in her Facebook post, her priority is her children.  She’s obviously more concerned about their well being and naturally wants their life to remain as normal as possible. She and the kids need constant prayers lifted on their behalf as they adjust to this new way of life, but they also need our financial assistance.  If you’re the parent of a teenager, I don’t need to tell you how costly it is to raise a teenager. Try raising three while undergoing cancer treatments and flying back and forth to Houston. Not too mention, the financial expenses of Cathy’s six week stay in Houston.

I couldn’t agree more with Cathy’s words, “Life is a gift! Don’t waste a moment of it!” Let’s help her continue to enjoy the gift of life and not waste a moment worrying over financial expenses.

Would you consider a small gift/donation to help offset her financial expenses?  If so, we appreciate your generosity more than you know. And if you can’t contribute financially, we completely understand.  However, would you commit to praying for Cathy, her kids, our family and her medical team as she fights to defeat cancer?

“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us...And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”  (Romans 8:18, 28)
