Teva - Deadly brain virus survivor

Donation protected
We need your help to raise $37,000  for our son, Teva, 10 years old, to pay for past and future medical bills. No amount is too big and no amount is too small!!!

Teva started getting sick with what we thought was a common flu like symptoms. After 3 days of extremely high fever, Teva started having a seizure.  We then called 911 and Teva was transported to the ER.

After 2 seizures Teva was diagnosed with Herpes Encephalitis.  This virus is in many cases deadly and causes parts of the brain to necrosis by destroying the cells.

Teva was admitted to the PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) in San Diego right before Christmas. The doctors were not very optimistic. Teva's brain started swelling due to the inflammation caused by the virus. The intra-cranial pressure was becoming so intense that he was given high doses of sodium in order to try to reduce the swelling. The doctors thought of doing a craniectomy to relieve the pressure but then decided to let the anti-viral medicine act. The swelling stopped increasing and remained stable.
But after a day, Teva started having V-tachs (ventricular tachycardia) , which if not stopped can cause the heart to stop. Now, not only did we have a vital brain issue but a new one was arising. His V-tachs lasted for many days. He started getting treatment for the heart as well.

Teva started developping so many different problems that there were too many medicines to run thru the regular IVs.
So a PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catherer) was installed which was a able to stay in place for weeks and able to administer many medecine thru one line.

Teva stayed almost 3 weeks in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
After that time, the doctors decided that he could get out of the PICU and could continue his treatments (anti-viral for the brain, ant-epileptic for the seizures and beta-blocker for the heart) outside of the intensive care.

His last MRI shows that his left optical nerve might be damaged and Teva might in the future have important eyesight problems.

We are blessed that despite all of the complications, Teva did survive!!!! Our prayers were answered and someone up there decided it was not his time!!

However, the consequences are not yet defined. Teva's brain did get damaged but we do not know yet to what extent.
He will most likely be epileptic for life and will have to continue taking an anti epileptic on a daily basis. He still has to undergo many more appointments at the hospital to determine if his heart got damaged and if his vision will become deficient.
The bills are slowly starting to come in and despite our health insurance, and because this happened over the end of 2017 and the beginning of 2018, we will have to pay twice for our out of pocket expenses. Some of the tests and procedures are not covered.

Any donation that you can contribute to will help us cover the medical costs as well as the future bills.

We are extremely proud of Teva. He suffered thru many procedures and treatments but fought like a lion.

We are also extremely proud of our daughter Tiara, 12 years old, who gave us the strength to believe in life day by day (and who patiently waited for weeks to open her Christmas presents until her brother could be present!!)

This experience was extremely painful for our entire family.  Christmas will never be the same! But we will keep strong so that Teva can recover and go back to a normal life.

Thank you for your time , your support and your caring !
