I am returning to Senegal for the third year to continue our project Every Kid Counts – Senegal which supplies medical & dental care, education, food, clothing, and emotional support to hundreds of children forced to beg on the streets of Senegal, West Africa for survival.

Abuses against Talibé Children in Quranic Schools escalates in 2022

Abuse, exploitation, and neglect of children attending Senegal’s still-unregulated, traditional Quranic boarding schools, daaras continued at alarming rates. Human Rights Watch has estimated that over 100,000 children known as “talibés” are forced by their Quranic teachers in Senegal to beg daily for money, food, rice, or sugar. Many Quranic teachers (also known as marabouts and their assistants continue to set daily begging quotas enforced by beatings, and subjected talibés to neglect. Some committed other forms of abuse, such as chaining, and murdering talibé children.

Each year thousands of talibés, including Senegalese and foreign children, migrate to major cities to attend Senegal’s daaras. Thousands of talibés are victims of human trafficking. Trafficking under Senegalese law includes the act of exploiting children for money through forced begging, as well as the recruitment or transport of children for this purpose.

2020 with YOUR support we opened our project with a free food Café Jamme Xaley (Peace Child Café) which sustained up to 90 street begging talibés and local children per day during the Covid-19 Crisis. Spending time with the children we know their survival needs and we are dedicated to meeting those needs daily.

2 Years Later our project has grown to be the sole career for up to 387 Children forced to beg.

Clothing – Clean NEW clothing gives our children dignity,

On site Education – Reading, writing, maths, science and art,

Repairs and decoration of daaars – no more leaks, security doors & pleasant living conditions

We have given every child a bed so no one sleeps with his face in the dirt on a stone-cold floor,

Sports – Football Club, they desperately need footballs,

2 Fresh Drinking Water Wells, clean water and cleanliness save lives
