Terry is a loving husband, father and now a grandfather. He has always been a hardworking man who has always worked and provided for his family until now.
Terry went to work as usual on June 22nd 2021, as a Commercial Gas Technician. During his working day, there was a severe health and safety breach; a bolt was not secured on top of a commercial boiler. This caused Terry to fall and sustain an incomplete spinal cord injury. This has left him with damage to his spinal cord at C3, C4 and C5. Terry is now classed as having tetraplegia. This has caused him to have no feeling on his left side, no bladder control or sense and loss of sensation in the right fingers. He has had surgery to replace the discs in his spine and a metal cage to be inserted. Since the accident, he must wear a neck brace while travelling to stabilise his neck from sudden movements; he uses a wheelchair and has limited walking with special walking sticks; he also has an indwelling catheter fitted. He has Lhermitte’s phenomenon and has intermittent, uncontrollable shaking to his right arm.
Terry has completed a 3-month inpatient stay at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire for intense physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, wheelchair skills, Occupational therapy and bladder training. Physio is still ongoing locally following Terry's discharge via the NHS Trust.
The current home set-up is unsuitable and requires adaptations, which is where this page comes in. Below is a list of Terry's requirements for him to live day to day more independently.
- Terry needs a bathroom/wet room to be installed downstairs so he can access washing facilities that we all take for granted, as he cannot do stairs
- A lightweight wheelchair
- Terry needs the access to his house reconfigured as there are steps to the front door
- He needs the kitchen redesigned so he can access the worksurfaces, sink, and cooker so he can reach them and use them
