Terry Reabold’s Road to Recovery

We’ve created this page to help alleviate some of the medical bills and loss of work that Terry is experiencing due to this sudden condition. (Her story is below) She does not know this page has been created and we would like to surprise her with it once she is discharged so she doesn’t have to worry about how the medical bills will get paid. (Which we know will be her number one concern if she isn’t able to work)

On Thursday February 8, 2018 our Mom went to bed with some tingling/numbness in her feet. When she woke on Friday February 9 the tingling was still present but she decided to go to work anyhow. Throughout the day the tingling/numbness moved into her lower legs as well as her hands and she told her co-workers she didn’t feel right. After finally agreeing she shouldn’t finish work and should go to urgent care, she was taken there by her husband Craig. While at urgent care they said she should not go home and needed to go to the hospital because they felt whatever was happening was neurological and required immediate care.
She went to Lehighton hospital and after 4 hours of testing they told her they suspect she had Guillain Barre Syndrome https://www.ninds.nih.gov/Disorders/Patient-Caregiver-Education/Fact-Sheets/Guillain-Barré-Syndrome-Fact-Sheet and needed to be transferred to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest.
Gullain Barre Syndrome is a neurological disorder that affects the immune system and attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. It starts in the limbs and moves it’s way up the body. It can affect your internal organs causing trouble breathing and paralysis because of the damaged myelin of the nerves.
By the time she was taken in ambulance to Lehigh Valley she could barely walk.
She arrived at LVCC and was in a regular room for less than 24 hours before they transferred her to the ICU.
They were preparing for intubation because of how Gullain Barre Syndrome progresses.
After 2.5 weeks in the ICU and 10 of those days being intubated, coming down with pneumonia, being sedated, and giving all of us a scare, Terry finally was moved to the rehabilitation floor at Lehigh Valley.
She has been slowly making progress to regain strength and feeling in her extremities. She is in a lot of pain and continues to have tingling/pins and needles in her hands and feet. The road to recovery with GBS is a long one and there is no guarantee she will recover 100%. Anyone who knows our mom knows she will get through whatever is thrown at her or she will make the best of the situation.
As of March 19 she is still in rehabilitation but showing great improvement. She has learned how to feed herself, put her clothing on, and slowly move herself to a walker or wheel chair in order to get out of bed. She has taken steps with the assistance of a walker and is determined to walk out of rehab on her own.
