Terrapins Support For "JJ"

Donation protected
The team would like to update our Terrapin Family about a long time TERA swimmer and Coach, JJ Setchell. “JJ” began swimming in 1980 and progressed through the Terrapin ranks to eventually swim in Ray’s National group. JJ was part of the “distance group” focusing primarily on the 1500/1650. JJ was known as a fierce competitor, tough trainer and a supportive and positive teammate. JJ was also one of those swimmers who went above and beyond in terms of helping the team. He was the first to be out there on cold mornings helping the coaches pull the tarps and stayed around after practice to help put them back on. JJ was incredibly generous and the kind of guy who do anything for a teammate. He is one of the “Original” Terrapins and he helped define who we were and what we valued. He was direct, honest, tough and compassionate.

JJ began coaching for the Terrapins in the late 90’s, took a break and then returned as an assistant coach but due to declining health could not continue his routine of a full day’s work plus his evening coaching duties. JJ was loved by his swimmers and had many unique coaching perspectives that challenged and motivated those under his charge. Our parents and staff were very grateful for JJ’s contributions and commitments to the team during a tough time.

We are asking all Terrapin “family” members, old and young to help us support JJ and his family during this difficult time. JJ had beat cancer once already in the 90’s and now faces a very tough personal challenge with a recent liver cancer diagnosis. JJ has been in treatment the past 3 months and begins his Chemo regimen on July 22 2020. JJ has a lovely wife and 3 daughters and we are asking our long reaching Terrapin support network to help with medical expenses and living expenses. JJ is unable to work and has a long journey ahead of him.  Please help us support JJ and his family with any level of donation.

Thank you to all current Terrapins and all past “old timers” who swam with JJ and know him well.

I reminded JJ of how tough he was as part of that infamous distance group and that he still has 500yds to go until he finishes that mile!  He is up for the challenge.
