Tennis for Refugees and a New Clubhouse at BTC
Donation protected
Our crowdfunder
This crowdfunder is linked to a Super Fun, Tennis Charity Event coming up at Bangor Tennis Club (BTC). The event is a unique opportunity for 'ordinary folk' to meet and play with two tennis professionals (Danny Sapsford and James Auckland) who will be at the club on Sunday 22nd May. The proceeds will be split 50/50 and used to provide tennis sessions/tennis coaching to refugees in North Wales, and contribute towards a much needed new clubhouse at BTC. Your support in the form of a donation (large or small) will make a real difference.
Thank-you in advance. Read on for more information ...
Danny Sapsford and James Auckland
Danny Sapsford and James Auckland are highly regarded, professional British tennis players. Danny won an ATP doubles title in Nottingham in 1996 and reached two other ATP finals. Both men have represented Great Britain in the Davis Cup .
Our special event
Danny and James are coming to Bangor Tennis Club and will be taking four, fun coaching sessions. These sessions are a once-in-a-lifetime, inexpensive chance for people of all ages and abilities (no need to be shy) to meet and play with two, top-flight tennis stars. Two of the sessions will be for children and two for adults. Booking is essential. On court, in addition to the coaching sessions there'll be the chance to serve against a speed gun and test your skill in a 'target practice challenge'. There will also be a 40 minute Exhibition Doubles Tennis Match between Danny and James, and two members of BTC! Why not come and cheer them on? Off-court, there'll also be family friendly sports themed activities and games, a quiz, cake stall, food and drinks. Everyone is welcome - the more the merrier. Our refugee project
Bangor Tennis Club are proud to be working with Pobl i Bobl / Cefnogi Ffoaduriaid (People to People) who support refugees in and around Bangor. Through sport and community activity we want to send out a mesage that refugees are welcome at our club and in North Wales. Tennis is a universal sport that confers a range of mental and physical health benefits. We want to make a difference by offering refugees our facilities, our coaches (Martyn and Rob Lewis)and our club. We want to offer friendship, fitness and fun through tennis and to show that we care.
Our clubhouse project
Bangor Tennis Club has been described as a 'hidden gem'. It is registered with the LTA and Tennis Wales and has three beautiful, sheltered all-weather courts and over 180 active members. It is located near to Bangor University and close to the famous Menai Strait separating the mainland of North Wales and the island of Anglesey.

BTC was established in 1926 so the old clubhouse is almost 100 years old. It is infested with wood beetles and is now (quite literally) falling apart. The club have been working with local firm Brookwell Garden Rooms North Wales on a replacement, and planning permission has already been obtained. The work is scheduled for this summer, but more funds are needed to help get the job done.
Want to help?
If you like what we're trying to achieve at BTC, please come and join us at the event and/or help us with a donation today. Sport and friendship are powerful and positive forces for good in this world. Together, we can make a big difference in Bangor.
