Send EastVan Teen Filmmakers to NYC

Donation protected
**UPDATE:  Thank you so much to everyone in our community, our friends and families, and those who maybe don't even know us but who have heard our story and have felt inspired to support us. Thanks to anybody out there who wants to help a teenage filmmaker follow a dream! We hit $13,000 tthis week and we're so thrilled!  What a beautiful thing to watch our community rally around us!

We set our first fundraising goal at $13,000 because we didn't think it possible to raise this sum before leaving for New York City on Oct. 5th. We had planned to organize fundraising for the remaining $10,000 needed to subsidize our costs upon our return. Given that you're on our site, please donate! We're not done yet!

Each and every dollar will be spent getting us to New York City: our total fundraising goal is $23,000 which will subsidize for every Templeton film student the cost of flights, accommodation, and film festival fees. This amount will also allow our teacher organizer, Corin Browne, to offer almost complete coverage for students who, without financial help, wouldn't be able to attend the festival.

Thank you for supporting us! We promise to keep making films!

Remember the first time you were recognized for something truly important to you? Remember your feeling of pride and sense of self-worth? I bet it changed how you thought about yourself and your talents.   I bet it made you dream bigger and work harder.

This October, an incredible group of teen filmmakers from Templeton Secondary School’s Afterschool Film Program in East Vancouver have an opportunity to be recognized in New York City at one of the largest and best-regarded student film festivals in the world. Their films have been selected to screen in Times Square alongside work from the most talented young filmmakers from across the globe.

This past May, we submitted all four of the films we produced in the first half of Afterschool Film.  In September we were thrilled to hear the news that every single film was accepted—ALL FOUR FILMS!  There were over 5000 submissions from across 40 countries. Imagine our excitement to realize that every student that submitted work was recognized.  This achievement feels even more exciting when you look closely at who created these films:

·      Young women wrote and directed 3 of the 4 films.
·      Young women cinematographers shot 3 of the 4 films.
·      All four films feature a strong female lead character and two of them star young women of colour.

When you compare this to the appalling stats on the representation of women and marginalized/ racialized people in mainstream media, you may feel the frustration and heartbreak that meets many young people as they contemplate a career in film.  At Templeton, we actively challenge this status quo and work with young people to create stories that allow them to imagine the world as they want it to be.

For these reasons, we believe this festival is an important milestone for our program and our students and we think the best way to celebrate and honour their achievement is to travel to New York to participate.  School starts soon. We have a very limited time to fundraise for the trip and so we’re hoping you can help!

Templeton’s Dream Big Film Program has generously committed to contributing $500 per student.  Our goal is to fundraise another $13,000.  This allows us to ensure that every student – regardless of family income – will be able to join us to see their films screen in NYC.

Any amount helps! A donation of:
·      $750 will subsidize the cost of one student’s airline ticket.
·      $125 will pay for one student’s festival participation.
·      $300 will pay for the hostel stay for one teen
·      $200 will help a student sample New York’s best pizza and cover meal costs
·      $100 will give an east Van teen the chance to see a Broadway Musical
·      $50 will cover the cost of the Museum of Modern Art and the Paley Media Centre

This experience could be life-changing for many of our filmmakers. Please accept our deepest gratitude for any contribution you are able to make!
