i cannot stand asking anyone for help, but at this point i’m at a loss. on friday june 25th, i dropped my 10 year old yorkie off at a boarding service used by the app “rover”. the person had great reviews and i felt like her stay with the sitter would be without issue. i received a call saturday morning from the sitter saying my dog was attacked by one of the larger dogs she was also sitting when she left them unattended for a few minutes to feed the other animals. (though she told me she would be keeping T separate from other animals due to her small size of 5lbs) she told me it didn’t look bad and that she was not bleeding. when the sitter arrived at the vet, i asked for photographs. what the vet sent me was extremely alarming and significantly more severe than i was initially told. T immediately was placed on oxygen because she wasn’t breathing correctly and had multiple puncture wounds all over her body, one almost puncturing her lung, the others severely damaging her abdomen area. the vet told me that the bite actually happened friday night (not saturday morning like i was told? and that instead of taking her in, the sitter decided to attempt cleaning her wounds herself. so now her puncture wounds are infected and she needed to have emergency surgery which would entail cutting her open further to clean the infection and then close the wounds. after performing blood tests, they discovered her white blood cell count is basically nonexistent and she is unable to fight the infection herself. after x-rays, they discovered she had aspiration pneumonia, which means there is fluid around her lungs which puts her at even higher risk for surgery, anesthesia, and recovery. T went into surgery last night around 11pm and i’ve called for updates every few hours. as of 8pm her lungs are working at 98% which is great, but she has a drain in her wounds and the surgery recovery is going to take quite some time. they are now telling me she needs to be transferred to another animal hospital for close monitoring of her pneumonia. we have already spent $5K i don’t even have to make sure she is getting the care she needs, but now i’m going to need to come up with a few more thousand for her extended care, recovery, medication, and whatever else is needed. there is no guarantee that she will recover, but i’m trying to do whatever i can to make sure my baby is okay. the sitter “cannot” help though she is liable if my dog is was in her care and the other dog’s owners have refused to acknowledge or offer any apology or support financially or emotionally after this.
