TEDMED Event 2017

Donation protected
I am on a very short timeline for raising funds. We have extended this past the registration date to Sept. 27, 2017 to allow donors a longer window for donations. Sarah Ray is responsible as the person with withdrawal privileges for the funds raised and registration costs as my acting event assistant.

Why I'm fundraising:

I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 3 after coma, complete vascular collapse and brainstem damage.

Type 1 Diabetes, an autoimmune disease in the same family as Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis, is caused by an ongoing immune system attack on cells in the pancreas that produce insulin.

Insulin is the primary metabolic hormone responsible for allowing glucose into cells for the creation of energy and utilization of nutrients (i.e. life).

Lack of access to insulin (Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus) causes rapid breakdown of body tissues and organs for energy resulting in coma and death.

I've fought for survival for 52 years with all of it's treatment, the side effects of that treatment, the complications of the disease, and the profound financial burden and stigma it carries.

Parellel to that battle I have fought for the rights, survival, education, and optimal health outcomes of every person with the disease as an advocate and leader in the Diabetes environment.

I rarely ask for help other than participation in the  campaigns I have coordinated for Type 1 Diabetes awareness.

As an unincorporated nonprofit I have administered my organization and advocated for Type 1 Diabetes exclusively out of my own pockets already overburdened by skyrocketing illness treatment costs.

On behalf of those who suffer the 24 hour a day 7 day a week 365 day a year challenge to stay alive with no time off even while sleeping; and for those of us who are willing to put in the long hard hours to fight the status quo for better outcomes...

I am asking for your help.

I have been given an opportunity that I need your assistance to realize.

I've been nominated to speak at TEDMED.

This opportunity to reach and teach the medical profession about Type 1 Diabetes and how to bring better outcomes for those who suffer from it is immense and valuable.

Changes to the already successful event to specifically address autoimmune disease and Type 1 Diabetes in particular are underway.

I have been invited to attend this November to learn more about the event as part of my consideration as a nominee.

The cost is $4950 for the 3 day event.

As a nominee I have recently been granted a scholarship which will decrease the total registration cost to $2475 on the condition that I will be a working delegate at the event.

Registration fees travel and accommodations are paid for the event if I am chosen in the future as a Speaker so this is the only fundraising we will do to prepare for that possibility.

TEDMED, an official TED event, is known for it's exclusive speaker vetting process and the handpicked audience which is comprised of the most progressive medical providers in the world.

I am asking your assistance to pay the registration fee for attendance at the 2017 session.

As an Elder Type 1 Diabetes Stateswoman, a Joslin 50 year Medalist, and a representative of the International Diabetes Federation, I will be carrying T1D messages and reality of the last half century, as well as ways to make our lives better, to those who can assist us in creating dynamic outcomes while we wait for a much needed cure.

Thank you from the depths of my heart for your assistance with the costs of registration for the event.

Drop dead date for fundraising, Sept. 27, 2017.
