Teddy’s Collapsing Trachea Surgery

Donation protected
Hi, my name’s Kelly and I started this gofundme to help with my dog’s surgery for his collapsing trachea. He has stage 4 of collapsing trachea, and this surgery will have a stent placed in his trachea to keep his windpipe open to help him breathe better.

Teddy is a 10 year old Pomeranian, which is pretty young as most Pomeranians live to be 17-20 years old. Aside from 2 previous surgeries of removing bladder stones he is generally a healthy pup.

Teddy’s surgery date is set for Thursday, July 7th 2022.

Teddy has always been full of joy- he loves to meet new people, is playful, and the best at giving puppy kisses. His face always has the biggest smile, and his fluffy little tail is happy to see you any time of the day. He is the BEST big brother to Lilly (even when she’s tried to bully him around), and has always wanted to be buddies with any other animal he meets, especially cats.

Teddy is my baby- and basically my whole world (along with my other Pom, Lilly). I got him my senior year in college and we’ve been through so much together; 7 moves, 2 states, loss of family, and a life changing car accident. Luckily Teddy wasn’t in the car for my car accident, but he was always there to get me through it all. He’s been my consistent rock for the past 10 years.

I hate seeing him struggling to do something as simple as breathe. Collapsing Trachea is a genetic condition that can be common in small dogs. There are 4 stages of this, where the tracheal tube closes until it’s only open about the size of a straw. Teddy is currently on stage 4 - as it’s progressed rapidly within the past year. Collapsing Trachea can cause a honking cough at first if the dog gets too excited- and should subside once the dog is calmed down. However once the condition gets worse there is more of a gasping for air- that can be caused for no reason.

There are many treatments than can be done prior to surgery- and we have done them all. Teddy has been on every medication possible- and is currently on 6 medications that he takes daily (including steroids and sedatives). My house is now centered around making him comfortable with cooling mats, air purifiers, cold mist humidifiers, and fans constantly running where he likes to sleep (so he doesn’t overheat and pant). I’ve even tried some herbal treatments such as manuka honey, slippery elm, and others.

This surgery will have a stent placed into his trachea to help keep it open- and make it easier to breathe. The surgeon that specializes in this surgery, at Red Bank Vet Hospital, says he makes for a great candidate. Yes there are risks of the surgery- as with anytime of going under anesthesia, but I believe the benefits will outweigh the risks. And if all goes well, he will just need to be on 1 medication for the rest of his life - instead of the slew of pills/liquids he’s on now.

I would do anything for him- even going into almost $10k of debt. The surgery is going to cost approximately $9,000. I understand that not all of this will be raised, but any funds to help cover the costs will be helpful.
