TEARS High School, Dom. Rep. "Finish with Class"

Donation protected
TEARS High School collaborates with local and international organizations to offer students medical care, dental care, and nutrition. Additionally, we teach administrative skills, entrepreneurial skills, and problem-solving skills, which will equip our youth to become leaders in their spheres of influence. Our heart is to launch students into the challenging “new global” environment fully equipped to thrive and reach their full capacity. The completing of construction at TEARS High School will propel this effort forward, and we need your help to make it happen.  By leveraging our finances we are able to save hundreds of thousands of dollars using shipping containers for our construction.  They are highly efficient energy-saving building units. Moreover, we are building with used shipping containers that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill.

Poverty is a stumbling block in the way of succeeding. How do we fight back? Education is the stepping-stone and primary weapon against poverty and its effects. Different stages of education have corresponding positive effects on poverty based on levels achieved. A youth’s economic well-being is directly correlated with their level of education. The lack of education is a primary cause of low-earning potential and allows poverty to persists even in the following generations. Our goal to facilitate an opportunity for the poor by focusing on these needs holistically and break the chains of hopelessness.

The direct effect of education on poverty reduction is through increasing the earnings/income or wages. The indirect effect of education on poverty is important with respect to ‘human poverty’ because as education improves the income, the fulfillment of basic necessities becomes easier and raises the living standard, which assuredly means a decrease in human deficiency. Education indirectly helps in the fulfillment of basic needs like proper nutrition, water, and sanitation, utilization of health facilities and shelter. It is found that such basic needs increase productivity and wages accordingly, helping people rise above the poverty line.

What does this mean? We can really impact generations of youth? Can I help a youth change the trajectory of their life?

Yes! Higher education increases the chance of a youth rising out of the poverty cycle. Education and poverty are inversely related. The higher the level of education of the population, lesser will be the number of poor persons. Why? Because education imparts knowledge and skills, which is supportive in earning capacity. We believe that investment in education will increase the skills and productivity of households living in poverty. Without opportunity, poverty will continue to be a deterrent that stifles an individual and kills hope. Without opportunity, the wide array of social pressures along with the struggle to survive will continue to hinder the much needed to help break the cycle of poverty.
