Sponsored by the Lehigh University Iacocca International Internship, and the Grant for Experiential Learning in Healthcare (GELH), a group of interdisciplinary undergraduate students, along with their mentors, will be traveling to Uganda this upcoming summer, 2015. During their 8-week stay in the Bududa District of the Eastern African country, students will be working on a broad range of assignments.
The assignments fall under the authority of either the Pathways Development Initiative (PDI) or the Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children (FIMRC). In collaboration with PDI, a non-governmental organization aimed towards fighting poverty through education and literacy, students will aid co-founders, David and Elizabeth Zaale, in three major capacities. These capacities include working at the PDI Education Center, helping to maintain and assess the PDI savings and loan program, and assisting in the development of an eco-tourism industry.
In concert with FIMRC, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health of families in the developing world through the implementation of innovative and self-sustainable health improvement programs, students will support staff by performing activities including, but not limited to, taking vital signs, shadowing the attending physicians, and administering public health forums.
In addition to the fixed duties, students will also be free to conduct their own research endeavors, some of which include the topics of malaria and general health services.
That all said, the goal of the fundraiser is to purchase goods typical to that of a Western school district and health clinic, in order to support both PDI and FIMRC through their day-to-day operations. With respect to PDI, some examples of supplies students hope to bring on their travels include pencils, crayons, books, and dry erase boards. Urgent needs communicated by FIMRC comprise of glucose test strips, lancets, medical gloves, HIV test kits, and hand sanitizers. Needless to say, the aforementioned materials are only a small sample of a wide assortment of goods required for the organizations to maintain a level of acceptable efficacy.
Supplementary to the primary objective, students also hope to purchase LifeStraws . Over the years, Uganda has been subject to a number of fatal landslides. Such devastating occurrences have the ability to compromise water accessibility for a multitude of individuals. That said, with the possession of the acclaimed, portable, filtration system, residents can have a sense of reassurance, knowing that they are still capable of obtaining nonpathogenic drinking water in a worst case scenario.
Through your generous donation, we have the potential to instill a footprint in Uganda- leaving this promising country a much better place, one person at a time.
