John Szucs, a brilliant computer architect, Renaissance Man, and patriot, passed away on September 30, 2018 at the age of 48 after an amazingly valiant battle against leukemia.
Born July 2, 1970 in Chicago Heights, IL, he was the son of John and Eva Szucs. Given a computer by his parents at the age of eleven, John taught himself to write computer code. That computer was the best gift in so many ways. It led him to college at the Illinois Institute of Technology where, because of his talent, he was recruited by Commodore before he even finished his degree.
John had a life-long desire to serve in the United States military, but his childhood asthma prevented him from being accepted. Ever the innovative and creative thinker, John, given the opportunity to work with the 82d Airborne Division on mission planning software just after 9/11, jumped at the chance and was able to fulfill his dream to serve by becoming a Department of Defense contractor and writing computer programs that soldiers needed. In this capacity he had an indelible impact on soldiers’ lives even if he never met them, and there were documented cases of the programs he wrote saving lives. John loved nothing better than to work alongside soldiers and turning their visions into working tools that worked for them. John deployed four times, twice each to Afghanistan and Iraq, and would have gladly deployed again because he loved his brothers in arms and knowing what he was doing mattered.
John leaves behind a deeply proud and saddened wife, Kathy; a son, Tripp, and his father, John.
In this trying time, we are hoping that family, friends, acquaintances and even strangers who are touched by John’s story might be willing to step up and donate a few dollars in order to defray funeral expenses and help Kathy and Trip get back on good footing financially. As with many cancer cases when younger people are taken, the life insurance story is usually a sad one and John’s is no different…we should all take head and ensure we are not left in a place with too little to settle our scores and support those left behind. We are just trying to ensure that Kathy and Tripp shouldn’t have to worry about having enough money to get over the initial hump their loss has created in an already more than stressful time.
