Roste and Sivu have been some of my best coaches and traveling buddies over the years. We have coached in places like White Mountain, Anaktuvuk Pass, Kaktovik, Arctic Village, Glenn Allen, Mentasta, Girdwood, and in Anchorage. Some of the most beautiful places to skijor in the world. They have pulled hundreds of skiers throughout the state through the forest, mountains and across the tundra. It is true, you are never alone if you are traveling and skiing with your dogs. Long road trips with one in the front seat and one right behind me. It is the perfect duo, Roste from Norway and Sivu from Alaska.
Unfortunately, both dogs were hit by a car while unloading them in a parking lot. Roste was hit by the front of the car and Sivu was run over twice by the front and rear wheel. It was just bad timing and a kennel that broke on the drive over with an overcrowded parking lot. Mushing dogs are amazing. They take constant focus and are always eager to go on an adventure much like me. Sivu is much like any Alaskan; tough, determined, and filled with adventure.
Both these dogs are my best friends, and co-workers. I have spent the past five years using dogs for community health projects. We use skijoring as the activity and often times invite vets and other coaches to work with communities. It has opened my eyes in so many ways what skiing and coaching is truly about. Once when visiting Anaktuvuk Pass, I walked into the gym to say hi to the students upon arriving. They all saw me entering the gym and one student yelled across the gym, "Lars, did you bring Sivu?" Sivu stayed home that trip so I said no. All the students turned back to playing basketball showing who they were looking forward to seeing.
Sivu had major injuries and required an overnight stay at Pet Emergency. Roste and I spent the night for the first time without Sivu in many years. We are so lucky in Anchorage to have amazing Vets at Pet Emergency and Southside Animal Clinic. You have been amazing through the process! Both dogs are on the long road to recovery and I am hoping they both get back to coaching and adventures in Alaska. Please support Roste and Sivu as they are on the trail to recovery.
