My name is Melissa Koon and I would like to share a story with you. It's a story about a woman who is a daughter, sister, aunt, friend and most importantly she is a mom to her precious young boys, Steven (age 8) and Nick (age 3). This story is about my sister, Jen Koon, who recently has been diagnosed with Breast Cancer.
Jen is my younger sister who celebrated her 40th birthday last year and 6 months later was told she not only had breast cancer but she had 2 types of breast cancer, one being a non invasive form and the other being a very invasive form. Jen is a fighter and took the news remarkably well. She rolled through the next handful of doctor's appointments like a mom on a mission! All the while holding her game face as to not upset her boys.
Surgery day came and she held it together (I'm so proud of you Jen!) but the results of the lumpectomy and lymph node removal weren't as positive as we'd hoped. Jen was given the news that she would need to have a mastectomy of the left breast and all lymph nodes, following surgery will be rounds of radiation and chemotherapy. Still Jen has kept her thoughts positive and has pushed forward making the decision to not only perform the mastectomy of the left breast but the right breast as well to avoid any future issues.
Jen is scheduled to undergo double mastectomy surgery on January 26, 2015 (a great day by the way as it is Jen niece's birthday as well as Jen's grandfather's birthday). After surgery Jen will be unable to work for some time as she then undergoes radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
This is where you all can play a role in this story! Let's help take some of this weight off of Jen's shoulders! Jen is a single parent with two amazing and active young boys. You can imagine the time, energy and money it takes to run her home smoothly. Jen will not be able to work for a lengthy time after surgery due to her radiation and chemotherapy treatments and healing. It would be great if we could help Jen with paying the mounting medical bills and to help keep her boys healthy and happy during all of this!
