On Tuesday May 26th, 2015 Justin will start his journey with a bone marrow transplant to help cure his life long battle with a blood disorder called Diamond Black Fan Anemia. Team Medley has been blessed to have so many loving friends and family praying for Justin since he was first diagnosed with the disorder at 2 months of age. Justin is now 17 and will graduate from Albuquerque High School on May 16th. Your thoughts, prayers and loving support have carried the entire family through this amazing journey of life.

We are proud of the young man that Justin has grown up to be! He has always had the soul of wise old man, the heart of lion and such a kind and gentle personality. Along the way, Justin has fought through many complications and side effects of the DBA disease/medications to include several hip surgeries, glaucoma and growth challenges (with the help of modern medicine he is proud to tell you he is 5’6 inches and plans grow a tad more to be taller than Frank, Terry and Greg). He has been resilient through it all and his illness has not stopped him from pursuing his passions in life. Justin captured the powerful Andronicus family in his thespian role as Marcus Andronicus in Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus. He has mastered many culinary dishes through family recipes and his four years of culinary school at AHS. Don’t even get started on Justin’s love of music and movies as he can quote the words and lines across all genres.

For the past two years, Justin’s health has been on the decline with low red blood cell counts and many blood transfusions. Justin’s time has come to take the next step in what will hopefully be a permanent cure to the Diamond Black Fan Anemia. May 26th through June 5th, Justin will be starting Phase II of his Bone Marrow transplant procedure. This is the Pre-Admission stage in which he will undergo many lab test, cultures, bone marrow biopsy, pulmonary consult, EKG/Stress Echo, radionuclide GFR (kidney test), chest x-ray, CT (chest, sinus, abdomen, pelvis), dietary consult, life specialist, neuropsychology consult and central line placement. Team Medley will be traveling up to Denver, Colorado where they will stay with Justin for the next 4-6 months.

Phase III (Preparative Therapy – Chemo/Radiation treatments) are tentatively scheduled to begin on June 8th and will run through June 15th. The bone marrow/stem cell infusion will follow on June 16th, followed by 3-4 months of in-patient recovery. During this time, Justin will be limited to the same six visitors to help reduce the chance of infections and other complications. The family has setup a website and blog to keep everyone up to date along the way. We are again blessed to have so many wonderful and supportive people in our lives.

Keep on praying – God is good, all of the time! All of the time, God is good!
