Help Eddie's Family

On Monday March 26, 2018 Veronica (mom) believed that my grandson Eddie was showing signs of being ill.  She took him to the doctors but was told there was nothing wrong with him and he was released. Later the next morning  Tuesday March 27th about 2am Veronica took Eddie to the ER because he kept crying  as if something was hurting him, her mother’s intuition told her something was not right. The doctors concluded that Eddie had an ear infection and prescribed him some antibiotics.  Medical professionals sent Eddie home yet again.

Veronica followed up with an appointment with Eddie’s primary doctor on Wednesday March 28.  His doctor informed her that Eddie was not suffering from an ear infection and the doctor decided to run X-rays.  The results of the X-rays came back Thursday March 29. The X-rays returned with abnormal results. The doctor advised Veronica and Vincent (dad my son) to take Eddie to Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) as soon as possible.

Thursday March 29th Veronica and Vincent took Eddie to the hospital where he was admitted and a series of test were scheduled. Veronica stayed with Eddie overnight and Vincent went home to tend to their other four children.  The results were available by Friday evening.  Both parents were completely unaware that the results that they would receive would change their lives forever.

On that Friday evening of March 30, 2018 we were told that my grandson  Eddie had 3 masses. Also that 1 of the masses was very large and it was wrapping around his Spinal cord and compressing against  it causing him pain and that he would need EMERGENCY surgery to try to release some of the pressure .  He also had a mass on his liver and 1 on his neck near collar bone area.

Early Saturday  morning about 2am  Eddie went into emergency surgery to relieve pressure off of his spine due to a tumor that had wrapped around it. After 3 hours of waiting the Doctor came out said everything went well and that they also had taken some of the tumor for biopsy to confirm if it was CANCER. The morning of Easter Sunday Eddie stopped breathing while I was there with him. My heart stopped as i witnessed  Doctors and medical personnel rushed into the room to assist him.  Doctors decided to place him on a breathing machine because his body was too weak to breathe on his own.  A tube was also placed on his right side to drain fluids that were accumulating in his right lung, as well as placing a pick line.

A few days later we received confirmation that my Grandson had been diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma is a cancer often found in the small glands on top of the kidneys (adrenal glands). It can develop in the belly, chest, neck, pelvis, and bones. Children ages five or younger are most commonly affected.

Eddies 1st birthday was on April 18th.  The nurses at CHOC decorated his room and a separate family room so that others could share and celebrate the milestone with him.  Eddie was surrounded by family  just as any 1-year old should celebrate their birthday.

Eddie has currently gone through three rounds of chemo treatments since his diagnosis.  He is scheduled for a minimum of 6 rounds. He began to lose his lovely long hair (known as his man bun) shortly after his first treatment.  It was very difficult for family and loved ones to witness as he went through difficulties already.

He also had to have his Bone Marrow Tested but due to him being to weak and having blood infections and a virus they kept having to postpone the testing. He finally was able to have it tested on May 4 and the results we received came back POSITIVE. Not what we wanted to hear.

Eddie had to spend a little over  2 months in the hospital and finally got to come home on May 17.

My goal in creating this page is to raise the funds necessary to give Eddie the safe and healthy place he needs to fight and recover from this Cancer.  We also need to raise money for food and transportation to and from the hospital for his Treatments, as well as to supplement loss of income. Veronica (mom) has had to quit her job to care for Eddie and will have a long list of daily and weekly procedures for Eddie including oral medications and specific cleaning procedures to make sure that he is safe while his immunity is low.

Vincent is currently the sole provider of his family of 7 and is working through all of this trying  to get by. Our family is torn apart by all of this.

We greatly appreciate all the support and I ask that you keep my grandson Eddie in your thoughts and prayers as we have a long long road ahead of us.
