Team Beck

Donation protected
On Tuesday, January 9, 2018, Beck was found in bed, blue in the face and not breathing. His father Ben, a Bailey, CO firefighter and EMT, resuscitated Beck while his mother Jessi called 911. Ben’s coworkers raced to the house and worked on Beck until flight for life brought him to Children’s Hospital in Denver. He had suffered a seizure that caused his breathing and heart to stop. That same day while at the hospital, Beck had two more smaller seizures and another large one.

Beck has undergone a number of tests to determine the cause of the seizures. His MRI showed a small cyst deep in the brain near an area that talks to the heart, but not all of the doctors are convinced that it’s the cause. Genetic testing will be done to determine if Beck has a predisposition to epilepsy, but the results take up to a month to get back. He was put on anti-seizure medication and thankfully has not had another seizure since then.

On Tuesday, January 16, Beck had a pacemaker put in to restart his heart in the event of another seizure. Ben and Jessi are preparing themselves at home to administer emergency meds and assist with breathing. Only .3% of seizure patients have their breathing and heart stop during the event. This is such a rare occurrence that the neurology team has asked if they can write a case study about Beck. Hopefully what they find will help other patients in the same situation.

Donations will go toward medical expenses, supportive equipment for their home and travel expenses, as there will be many tests ahead and lots of travel back and forth to Children’s to determine the cause of the seizures.

Ben and Jessi are so thankful to all of the doctors and nurses at Children’s and for all the support from family, friends and coworkers!
