As you all know AK has been hospitalized for two
weeks. This health crisis has been unexpected and overwhelming. There is indication of a long road to recovery. Many have expressed concern, a desire to help,and an overall care for her well-being. As a single mom and the sole provider for her son, the financial implications of her hospitalization and inability to return to work have created a troubling scenario. This timetable is uncertain and unpredictable.

AK’s independent and proactive nature has changed many of our lives; she has taken action on numerous fronts---it is her positive example that leads us to establish a GoFundMe account. These resources will cover medical expenses and monthly living necessities, enabling AK to focus all her attention on a complete return to health.

Here is the account of what has transpired to date.

On Sunday, August 19th, after running her fastest marathon ever in Washington, AK boarded a plane to return home. During flight she became quite ill,experiencing severe pain, nausea, and vomiting. She went to the ER on Sunday evening and was treated for dehydration and instructed to see her primary care doctor if pain continued. AK’s severe and unrelieved pain persisted through the next day causing her to return to the ER. A hospital admission led to an initial diagnosis involving her gall bladder which was incorrect. The physicians finally discovered that AK had a significant intestinal condition. AK’s past medical history included the removal of an ovarian tumor over fifteen years ago. Scar tissue and adhesions from that surgery had developed over time leading to a very serious and complete bowel obstruction. The initial treatment plan included an NG tube to drain the stomach. This plan failed, requiringAK to undergo two major abdominal surgeries within a twelve hour period and a stay in ICU.

AK has impacted our lives in her service capacity which obviously reflects a self-employment status. Her ability to generate income has been and will continue to be strained. Please consider your role and level of financial commitment as we take steps toward assisting in this time of need. The intent is to alleviate stress and provide AK every opportunity to focus on her full recuperation.
