Dear Friends and Family,
For those of you that are lucky enough to have Reba Nomeland in your lives, you know that she was recently diagnosed with stage 5 kidney disease. This essentially means that over the last few months her kidney function has been drastically decreasing, until last week when they reached 7% of normal function. The ultimate goal in this long process is for Reba to find a kidney donor, but time will only tell when she will find a match.
Reba is the most kind- hearted, loving, and generous person I have ever known. Despite everything that is happening at the moment, she continues to smile and laugh, and go out of her way for others. She chooses to look at the bright side of things, and to her, this means having dialysis as an option. She's an example to follow and her faith in God never falters.
Last week, Reba underwent surgery to start dialysis. The original plan was to utilize a prosthetic vein, however, midsurger, the surgeon made the decision to go another route. He created a "fistula", which means they basically connected an atertery and vein in her arm to make the vein stronger over time, so it can eventually be used as the main access for dialysis. This will approximately take 6-8 weeks to heal. In the mean time, Reba's medical team felt that it was necessary to put a central line catheter directly into her jugular vein, so that she could start dialysis immediately.
Reba is grateful that insurance has covered most of the expenses and that she has so much support from her family; however, medical bills are quickly adding up. She is also unable to work at her serving jobs at the Pickwick and Sammy's Pizza, making living expenses more difficult.
I'm calling on all of my loved ones to help my roommate in covering some of her medical expenses. I will be keeping up to date on her condition and changing the goal as needed. You can follow Reba more closely on her Caring Bridge Page .
