Destination Imagination Global Finals
OUR STORY
Starting in September of 2017, the Cottonwood News Flashers, our Destination Imagination (DI) team from Cottonwood Creek Elementary School, began working on the “Service Learning” challenge. The Service Learning Challenge is designed to engage students in public service by identifying, designing, and executing a project that addresses a need in a real community.
The Cottonwood News Flashers were especially moved by the story of Adams Elementary School, a low income school in Houston that was hit by Hurricane Harvey. After Hurricane Harvey, the school was closed for 6 months, with many students living 8 families in a small home and attending another school with 50 kids in a classroom. Our team came up with an idea to set up a school supply drive to help Adams Elementary School. Together, the Cottonwood News Flashers collected over 1,600 books for their library, toys, art supplies, notebooks and binders, backpacks and lunchboxes and PE equipment. We shipped all of the school supplies to Adams Elementary School in Houston, Texas. After executing our service project, our team created a live presentation highlighting the project and the impact it made on the community.
Our team, made up of six 3rd grade students (Colby, Delaney, Kate, Katie, Regan and Zach), competed at the Regional tournament in March, 2018 and took 1st Place! On April 7, 2018 we competed in the State competition, competing against 4th and 5th graders and placed 2nd - qualifying us to compete at the DI Global Competition in Knoxville, Tennessee!! Our team is beyond excited to represent Englewood, Colorado in Tennessee!!! We will compete against 1,500 teams from over 20 countries.
COSTS
Our goal is to raise $10,000 to cover the Destination Imagination Global fees, as well as travel expenses for our six participants and 3 adults. The Global Competition will take place May 23-26, 2018. Any donation you can give to help us reach our goal will be greatly appreciated!!
WHAT IS DESTINATION IMAGINATION?
Destination Imagination, Inc. (DI) is a leading educational nonprofit dedicated to teaching students the skills needed to succeed in school, their careers and beyond. DI develops project-based learning programs that blend STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education with the arts and social entrepreneurship.
Each year, DI works with educators and industry experts to develop seven new academic Challenges in the fields of STEM, the arts, social entrepreneurship and early learning. Students work in teams to research, design and build a solution to their preferred Challenge. In solving a Challenge, they learn the creative process - a powerful learning tool that helps students assess problems, reflect on their progress, learn from failure and turn their original ideas into reality. Students who participate in the Challenge Program have the opportunity to present their solutions at a local tournament and if they qualify at the state level, they're invited to participate in Global Finals, a culminating international tournament that celebrates student creativity.
GLOBAL FINALS
Global Finals is the world's largest celebration of student creativity. Every year in May, the top scoring DI teams from 45 U.S. states and 20 different countries gather in Knoxville, Tennessee to show their challenge solutions. Students have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and participate in a world class event!
It has been our team's goal since Kindergarten to make it to Globals! We are so excited and can't wait to show the world what we've got!!
