On October 7, 2017 one of my closest friends, Patrick and his wife Cara,  were faced with the unexpected. They welcomed their very premature baby Lennox into this world at just 23 weeks gestational age.

Cara was rushed by ambulance to Centegra hospital that morning after her water broke and her umbilical cord prolapsed, needing an immediate c-section and leaving Baby Lennox with a very slim chance of survival.  They chose to fight for their baby's life and give him a chance. She was then flown to Rockford Hospital via Flight for Life.  After 48 hours of difficult decision making and tons of medications to aid in strengthening baby's lungs and making sure Cara was safe,  the baby's heartrate began to drop and emergency surgery was the best option. Baby Lennox was brought into this world at 1 pound and one and a half ounces and 10 inches long and was in critical condition in the NICU. Unfortunately, their tiny baby lost his battle 3 weeks later on October 28 at 6:13 pm, in Cara's arms, surrounded by family.

Baby Lennox had extremely underdeveloped lungs to begin with then later developed 2 lung infections known as Group B Strep and Klebsiella Pneumonia. The lack of oxygen in his blood caused his body to develop metabolic acidosis and his organs didn't get the oxygen they needed. Lennox's kidneys shut down and he was deemed to little to do dialysis. Had they continued with their quest to keep him alive, he would've been in pain and all his sytems would've started shutting down 1 by 1. They were forced with the horrific decision of taking him off life support and letting him pass peacefully.

Patrick and Cara are strong, they are surrounded by many loved ones and have such strong faith. Besides prayers at this time, Patrick and Cara need to survive and keep their home. Patrick has been trying to go back to work to keep a roof over their heads since his FMLA is unpaid, although his heart is at home with his family. Cara is an independent contractor as a hairstylist and was put on activity restriction prior to going into labor because of complications with her pregnancy. She cannot return to work yet due to recovering from her emergency c-section and spending time at the hospital. As you can imagine, they are faced with a growing stack of medical bills for both Lennox and Cara and now have the added expense of a funeral to bury their precious son.

This has been more than just an emotional roller coaster for Patrick and his family. Let's all come together in time of need and help Patrick and Cara through this difficult time.

Any donations are much appreciated and will be forwarded to the Broderick Family.
