Imagine you are 10 years old. You are in the fourth grade. Nashville, TN is your home. But it hasn't always been your home. Just three years ago you were a refugee from Burma living in a camp in Thailand. That is the only life you have known before America.
Now imagine that after a couple of years in America, you start getting sick. You vomit constantly. You are too weak and sick to go to school. Your mom has to quit work to take care of you. You have been to the emergency room 2 times and sent home with notes on treament for stomach virus. Imagine trying to navigate the medical world, ask questions, advocate for care, and get well, when English is not your first language.
After 4 weeks of being ill, you finally get some attention and after an MRI, it is discovered you have a brain tumor. You are immediately admitted to the children's hospital and placed in ICU. Your operation is scheduled for 2 days later. You are scared, confused, angry.
This is a story of one of our students. He is a happy young man who works hard and wants to continue his education and continue learning English.
Eh Doe Soh needs our help. Now that his tumor has been removed the healing can begin. He may need more treatment such as chemo or radiation and his wounds need time to heal. So at this point, he has spent 7 days in ICU, had surgery to remove a brain tumor, multiple MRIs, not to mention what other treatment and hospital visits are still coming.
During this time we want to help this family take care of expenses. The family includes Mom, Dad, and 5 children. Eh Doh Soe is covered by insurance, but we all know there will be costs above that of insurance coverage. Along with medical expenses, we want to make sure that rent is taken care of, food, gas for dad to still go to work, utilities, etc. We want mom to be able to help his healing process and go back to work later when he is well. She needs to be able to care for her youngest child without worry of bills. We want to make sure they can rest easy about day to day money through this process. We don't know what medical bills will arise from this, what medications may be needed, we just want to get them as financially covered as we can.
All money will go toward family and medical expenses.
