Team Dan: Kicking Cancer's Butt

Donation protected
Hearing that someone has been diagnosed with cancer is always a terrible thing, but it’s so much more tragic when that person is someone as kind, big hearted and loved as Dan McGhee.

Dan was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and, although his journey has just begun, the battle is gearing up quickly.  An MRI is scheduled for June 27th, and surgery on July 10th, both at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.  After the surgery, Dan is expected to be out of work for 4-6 weeks, and then return to work on light duty until he can lift an appropriate amount of weight.

Those of you who know Dan can attest to the fact that he is a living contradiction.  Big, tall and tattooed, he’s a pipefitter who, at first glance, appears to be someone you don’t want to cross.  However, underneath that imposing appearance, is a heart of gold.  By day, Dan welds and lays heavy pipe, often wearing jean overalls.  But by night, he’s an amazingly talented artist, sculpting and painting masks and other special effects for his company, 7th Seal SPFX.  One Facebook picture shows motorcycles and leather, the next a tender moment with his beloved granddaughter.   Regardless of which facet of Dan you may meet, his kindness and humility are always present.

It’s no surprise that all of Dan’s co-workers, both in the office and out in the field, think so highly of him.  However, because of his humble nature, the outpouring of love truly surprised Dan.  Many of us wanted to do more than just express our concern, so this page was created.  Although Dan does have union and employer benefits, gone are the days when 100% of medical expenses were covered.  Additionally, the time needed to recover will not necessarily all be covered with paychecks.  And, of course, there are other expenses such a travel, lodging, meals, etc.

Ahead of Dan lies a potentially long road, but he will not be alone during his fight.   He has a multitude of friends and family that will be by his side and will do whatever they can to help him.  Dan will need all his energy focused on the path ahead of him, and not on the financial burden that these tragedies can bring.  Let’s try and lighten Dan’s load, and surprise him once more with how much we all care.
