Mission Friends,
We are heading once again to the Senegal Mission Eglise Methodiste au Senegale, a small but mighty Volunteer in Mission team to teach adults. We ask for your support with travel and materials expenses for the entire group, including students and translators and our EMUS hosts.
Why teach adults? Imagine a father who can’t afford to feed his children or send them to school. His only options are to marry off his daughters at age 12 and send his sons to be talibes—street beggars—in the city. Or the desperate father might beg, borrow or steal money, cross the Sahara to Libya and board a suicide craft to cross the Mediterranean hoping to beat the odds and get a job in Europe.
What if you were a mother whose husband had died or left you to feed and care for your children? No education, no home, your family unable or unwilling to provide for you.
These things happen every day in Senegal’s villages and even in Dakar, a city of 2.5million, many of whom live below the UN poverty level of $2 per day. Yes, children need an education too. And the best way to make that happen is to empower the adults responsible for them.
The United Methodist church, invited by the Senegalese President, established a mission and a church in 1995. They have fed the hungry, clothed the naked, visited the prisons, healed the sick, and educated adults and children to be productive citizens in both the city and the rural villages.
EMUS continues this essential work and you can help!
Dr. Carol is returning as team leader for the 11th time since 2005 to work with the Community Health Workers. These men and women, Muslim and Christian, have learned to improve the health of people in their communities. Their zest for additional knowledge continues to inspire their communities, the church and us.
An experienced Community Health nurse, Charissa returns with a track record of establishing and managing community health services in Detroit. Dr. Yetunde brings her public health background and experience working with the USVA.
Our business team will continue Deb’s work in Lean Startup education so women can pull themselves out of poverty with a micro-business. Alexandra and Catherine will add some advanced strategy and communication training. Deb is working with the team here in Chicago to carry on what she began four years ago.
We will be in Dakar March 9-18, 2018 teaching close to 100 adults, including the 25 Community Health Workers. We expect to visit Microenterprise groups, Women’s Skills students, Agriculture students, and UMW groups in Dakar, Theis and Mbour.
We hope you will consider prayerfully what you can give to continue this essential work with EMUS in showing the love of God.
