My volunteer trip to Malawi, Africa

Donation protected
I am Tyler Washington, a Freshman at the University of Michigan. I was offered an opportunity to study abroad in Malawi, Africa over this upcoming spring semester (May- July 2018).

If I can raise $3,500 I will be able to travel to teach senior year students information that will help them pass their year-end exam.  This exam is the (equivalent of the ACT/SAT in America) sole decider of whether they will go on to college.

Durring my time at the University of Michigan my identity has come into question in more than one way.

Coming into college I was top of my class with a 4.2 GPA; I thought college would be challenging but I could have never imagined the rigor of these classes. The hardest courses have been my math classes. After long nights awake studying at three AM and endless trips to office hours, I began to understand why Michigan made math so hard. In my everyday life I find myself making equations to predict everything imaginable. I have grown a love for mathematics and I love to share my knowledge with others whenever I get a chance.

My identity as a black woman in America was attacked in my first few months of college. After three racist incidents occurred on campus I had to do a lot of soul searching to find peace within myself. I decided to become more active in finding out about my people and their struggles. Since I have been here, I have written more than eight essays regarding different aspects of the black struggle and are currently working on a proposal that will detail repercussions for racist incidents so students on campus will feel safer.

This trip would allow me a chance to get to know more about my origins and what makes me the way I am. This will also allow me to share the vast knowledge I have obtained in college to help these senior year students to graduate and continue on to college.

I am not receiving any scholarships for this volunteer experience and it is completely up to me to raise this money.

This is how the funding is distributed:
Flights (Round Trip): $1,800
Food & Accommodations: $900
Travel (within Malawi): $700
Visas, Renewal and Passports: $100

Any donation amount would be greatly appreciated!
