Teaching English In Kenya

On a recent trip to Zambia and Kenya I was lucky enough to experience their cultures and meet people who have grown up within them. Despite their low standards of living and lack of opportunities in life, the people in both countries are some of the kindest, humblest and most gracious I've ever met. While we're all informed about life in poorest Africa and know we should be making a concerted effort to help those less fortunate than us, it's not always easy to do so until we experience it first-hand. One of the many things I realised is that there is so much that I can do to help.
From May 1st until June 20th, I plan to teach English to Students at Mindililwo Primary School in Iten, Kenya.

I will also be shipping out old running clothes and shoes donated by me and athletes at Cambridge and Coleridge AC that will be given to the school children and the local community. While I am out in Kenya I'll be setting up a charitable organisation with the mission of collecting runner's old clothes and shoes and shipping them out to Kenya and eventually Zambia. Hopefully this can grow into a country-wide operation with monthly collection dates at as many clubs as possible.
Why should you donate?
Ultimately, it is to help the children of Mindililwo gain a better education. A better education means better job prospects, a better job means a greater income, and a greater income means improved standards of living for both them and their family. It will enable their children to receive a better education and the cycle will hopefully continue through the generations. You may be wondering why I'm going on a spiel about education as a whole when all I'm doing is teaching them English. But in Kenya students are taught in English, so for them to get to grips with a subject they need to have near-flawless capabilities in English speaking, writing and reading. Forgetting the objective benefits of education, it can teach someone to be disciplined and ambitious, while enabling them to think critically as an individual about what's best for them and the people around them.
When I asked the Principal of Mindililwo, Robert Kiptoo, about the importance of learning English and primary education, his comments were in line with my beliefs: "(English) is the mode of communication in all levels of education in Kenya... (with a good education) the children will be able to go to good high schools after primary education. Good education will also enable them to have a bright future", he put simply.
Without your support I will not be able to help the children of Mindililwo who deserve so much. It would mean the world to them.
I feel lucky to have been able to witness how the other three quarters live, lucky to have seen living conditions so vile you can't imagine, but most of all lucky to have met the people trapped without the tools to give themselves a fighting chance because they are some of the most amazing humans I have ever met. I'm thankful for the opportunity to realise the ways in which I could so simply help these people and for being inspired to act. I can only hope you are too.
My target is £3000. This will go toward travel and costs of living. A significant part of the money will go toward the shipping and distribution of the clothes and shoes and any money left over will be put into a pot for setting up the charitable organisation.
