Pay it forward for Tom Gallagher

In the spirit of Thanksgiving and friendship, the friends and family of Tom Gallagher are organizing this GoFundMe page to help replace his 9 year old handicapped-accessible vehicle with a new custom van that will help him continue his life as an exceptional father, grandfather, teacher and role model for his students and for all of those lucky enough to know him.
Tom, is a loving husband, father to five children, grandfather of eight, teacher of mathematics at the McCarthy Middle School in Chelmsford, and a1992 graduate of North Adams State College where he played hockey.
On December 2, 2011, Thomas Gallagher came home from his teaching job and reported to his second job which, like many teachers, he took to supplement his income and support his family. While loading his truck for a catering job, Tom suffered a freak injury that would change his life forever. While lifting a tray of glasses, Tom suddenly felt a burning sensation in his legs. Within three minutes he lost all feeling from his waist down. Tom was rushed to the hospital where he underwent 7 ½ hours of surgery on spinal column which could not be repaired. As a result of the accident Tom was paralyzed from the waist down. Tom’s life, as a father, as a teacher, as a coach, had changed forever in an instant. Incredibly, from the first day after the accident, Tom has remained unfailingly positive and has fought hard to keep living his life teaching, coaching and being a positive role model.
Over the last nine years, Tom has not only overcome every challenge he has faced, but continues to care for and support his family and to serve as an incredible role model for all his students and friends. Although the past nine years have been filled with ups and downs, Tom has never quit and continues to fight, teach and lead. Tom’s strength and courage has been nothing short of inspirational.
Now, it’s our time to follow his lead and come together to help Tom continue to inspire others. As you would suspect, Transportation for Tom is vital in his ability to remain independent, work and support his family, keep medical appointments and to maintain his quality of life. The van Tom is currently driving is 9 years old and has long outlived its useful life and is beyond repair. Our goal is to raise $50,000 for a new van for Tom. . If we exceed our goal, any additional funds raised will be donated to the Travis Roy Foundation. Tom was fortunate enough to meet Travis after his accident and the Roy Foundation has been incredible in providing support to Tom and his family over the years. Tom’s family and friends would love to be in a position to give something back to the Foundation as well.
