Teach an Immigrant Woman to Read

Donation protected
Help adult immigrant women of all ages learn to read in this small group class in Oakland, CA. Students are low-income immigrants with minimal formal education. The class and child care for preschool-aged children will be free to students.

The class will hold 8-12 students who are not literate or semi-literate. Some students may be able to read in their first language, but most will not be able to read in any language because of gender discrimination and interrupted education. Students will be referred by other programs (in the school district and at non-profits) that do not have space for additional students and from word-of-mouth advertising.

Class will be 1.5 hours long and will be held 2 times a week. This class will continue for 3 months starting at the beginning of September. Students will be taught by experienced and credentialed ESL teachers. Class will be held in a low cost space close to students to minimize commute and overhead.

The target amount pays for a credentialed teacher and a child care provider. Having child care allows mothers with young children to attend class and benefit from education.

Educating women has a profound impact on communities. In fact, the best indicator of a child's future academic success is his or her mother's education level (National Center for Family Literacy). Help empower women and families in Oakland by giving them the gift of learning!

Any additional funds raised will go toward supplies and opening other ESL classes for Oakland's adult students.

Classes are offered by East Bay ESL, an English language school for adult students in the San Francisco East Bay. Learn more at www.EastBayESL.com
