Flood Assistance

The beautiful creek in this photo instantly became a raging torrent.  Our friend was eating lunch in the kitchen of his 200 year old home, when the water burst through the windows and flooded the first floor of his house above the countertops.  He had recently sold the house and was supposed to go to closing next week.  Because there was no declaration of emergency, there is no funding available to assist him.  Please note, a few years ago, he was told by FEMA that the house was not in the flood plain and flood insurance was not needed.  The house is located in Pennsylvania, not far from Easton.

It’s been the worst year for him.  His partner of 30 years died in January of leukemia.  His partner was the bread winner.  The loss of that income forced our friend to auction his furniture and to put his house on the market since he doesn't make enough money to cover the mortgage. The house was sold and the closing was supposed to be August 20th.  Last week, during heavy rains in the area, the creek overflowed its banks and inundated the area.  There was water in the first floor of his house up to 5' high.  The sale has been cancelled by the buyer.  Not only was the first floor ruined, the retaining walls of the creek washed away and his car was washed down the creek.  The funds will be used to lease a car for him, for professional disaster company cleaning, repairs and help him move into an apartment.  He will most likely still not be able to sell the house and will have to walk away from it.  It will go into foreclosure so he'll lose whatever equity was in the house.

We accomplished our initial goal and we are so grateful.  Our friend knows the amount of funds raised but not who has so generously donated money to help him.  We also received so many kind words and so much support.  This is also so greatly appreciated.  He says that each one of you is an angel - this is true.  We're leaving the fund open for a few more days.  To everyone who donated and/or offered your kindness, thank you so much.
