Three years ago, Wayland fell 13 feet paralyzing him from the chest down. His partner Aruna had the responsibility of his daily care and running their business, Octopus Garden. Wayland has always been an active man but now must spend most days in bed. He needs help with the purchase of a handicap van and proper wheelchair. The accident has not stopped him from writing two books using a voice to text app.

Taulua arrives in Mexico

A little about this remarkable couple.

Thirty years ago Wayland, Aruna and their young daughter, Kaerolik set sail from the UK in their extraordinary 34’ handmade canvas, paper and tar Catamaran, Taulua. They landed and made their home in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Mexico, a fishing village just 20 miles north of Puerto Vallarta. They took great interest in the Huichol indigenous people and started a project to build spinning wheels for them, financing it by printing Cultural Huichol Art T-shirts and employing 80 local residents for 20 years.
This workshop and the small breakfast café was called The Octopus Garden.

It has since turned into a vital hub of activity and a sought after La Cruz de Huanacaxtle destination for authentic music and art.  

Funds collected above and beyond our goal will be used for further, much needed physical therapy and building updates.
