Tasting History

I am a public high school US history teacher working in Lowell MA.

In a week we will begin studying the stories of immigrants and refugees who came to our shores more than a 100 years ago.  We will study Emma Lazarus’s inscription on the Statue of Liberty, and we will read poems carved into the walls of Angel Island by immigrants waiting to come into San Francisco.

While many students might need to imagine what it would be like to leave your homeland to come to a new country, I am lucky to have a  a classroom full of experts.

My students hail from more than 30 countries. Their immigrant stories are diverse and deeply inspiring and bring a wealth of knowledge, skills, and experiences to the classroom.

Last year we created a cookbook: 100 recipes from 30 countries, gathering favorite recipes and person present day stories of coming to America -- creating together a cookbook, brimming not just with delicious family recipes, but also with memories of far away homelands and dreams of American futures. (The Photo above is a picture of the cover of last year's cookbook!)

This year we are hoping to create a sequel with my new students - 100 new recipes drawn from across the globe, including: Colombia, Spain, Vietnam, Liberia, El Salvador, Brazil, Afghanistan, Italy, Nepal.

My hope is to raise the funds to design and buy enough copies of our new cookbook so that each of my 100 students and their families can have a beautiful colorful book of their recipes and stories for them to take home - to celebrate their stories and to learn of each others' histories and favorite foods.

**If you are interested in purchasing a copy of last year's or this year's cookbook so you too can try your hand at some delicious global recipes please contact me!

If you are curious about reading more about how we created the project last year, you can read the article I wrote here.
