On Memorial Day, Tasha, 35, and Ginger (Tasha’s fluffy white dog) started their return trip from Harbor Country in Michigan with Tasha’s good friend Emily, Chris (Emily’s husband) and Sue (Emily’s mom). They had enjoyed a relaxing weekend at a cabin on the St. Joe’s River, including a visit to a local winery, delicious food at a local brewery, and ice cream on the lakeshore.
In rural Indiana a construction zone forced traffic to a standstill. Shortly after coming to a stop in the right lane, Chris, Emily, Sue, Tasha and Ginger were struck from behind by a “distracted” driver. State troopers estimated the driver was traveling at LEAST 70 mph. No braking.
The Camry that the group was in was demolished, with Sue and Tasha trapped in the backseat. Rescue workers eventually broke a door to remove Sue. The jaws of life were required to extract Tasha. All four human passengers were transported via ambulance to a small local hospital. Medical personnel determined that a larger trauma center was required to handle the non-life threatening injuries of Chris, Emily and Sue. They were transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, IN for further care.
Devastatingly, Tasha was in critical condition and Ginger did not survive. Tasha was LifeFlighted to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Il, shortly after her arrival at the first hospital. At least three surgeries were required to alleviate internal swelling. She suffered an arterial nick that required 20 units of blood and plasma. Pins and screws were required to piece back together a crushed pelvis, and numerous other injuries were attended to.
Tasha’s plans to further her education, her career goals, her financial future, and her ability to walk were all pushed aside as she clung to life in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit for several days.
Five weeks after being admitted to Advocate Christ Hospital, Tasha was finally released to a nursing home back in Kenosha where she remains today undergoing physical and occupational therapy.
Doctors can’t answer whether or not she will make a full recovery. But there is good news…she recently was allowed to place partial weight on her hips and is relearning to walk with the aid of a therapist and a walker.
Not only did Tasha lose Ginger, her sweet fluffy companion of 8 years, she now faces a lifetime of medical expenses. The distracted driver of the car that crashed into them walked away uninjured. As it turned out the driver was underinsured, and it’s estimated that the helicopter flight alone will use up all available auto insurance.
Despite this horrendous event, Tasha greets every visitor with a smile and the assertion that she is “blessed” and “lucky to be alive.” She treats every nurse’s aid with gratitude and thanks everyone for the help she currently requires to complete the simplest of daily activities.
This fund was created by her friends. We’re looking to raise money to help with the mounting medical bills and other costs associated with the accident. We want to help Tasha rebuild her life once she is released from the nursing home. Anything you contribute will increase her odds of living independently, continuing her education, and maybe even finding another loving animal to share her life.
