Tara Romero Memorial Sculpture

Join our Community in Support of Unity, Peace, Renewal: Tara Romero Memorial Statue

Spring is a time for renewal, fresh beginnings and embracing possibility.

That’s why the City of Morgan Hill’s Library Culture and Arts Commission believes Spring 2018 is the perfect time to debut a piece of public art that will serve as an inspirational symbol of hope, peace and unity for young people growing up in our community.

Sadly, the impetus for this bronze sculpture – approved by the City Council in 2012 – began with a senseless act of gun violence that took the innocent life of 14-year-old Tara Romero and injured three other children here in Morgan Hill more than six years ago (see links below).

At the time, a stunned community came together with a desire to turn an inexplicable tragedy into an act of peaceful empowerment, through art.

Tara’s family has paid a total of $22,500, to LA-based artist, Dee Spellerman, to create a bronze sculpture in Tara’s likeness. The life-sized statue of a young girl, lifting a butterfly up in her right hand and gazing up at El Toro Mountain, will be placed at a central location between City Hall and the Library.

Now that the “Never Forgotten” statue is nearly finished, the City of Morgan Hill Library Culture and Arts Commission is launching this GoFundMe campaign to enlist support from local residents, civic organizations, community leaders and business owners to fund the remaining $10,000 needed to cover final costs (statue refinements, cement base, plaque, transportation, installation, etc.).  All funds raised through this campaign will be deposited in a designated account for direct payment to vendors associated with the project.

On this first day of Spring 2018, the Library Culture and Arts Commission is grateful for your support of this project, which is a creative expression of the right of “everyone’s child” to envision and achieve their dreams in a peaceful, non-violent community. With your contributions, we’ll be able to officially unveil the sculpture in the coming weeks alongside members of the Morgan Hill City Council.
