Tapscott Twins

I met Ruth & Tucker during our birthing class for our first borns at Martha Jefferson hospital in 2013. We were fast friends and forever will be family.

They are both teachers at Monticello High School. Tucker is also the head coach for the Monticello Mustangs Lacrosse and assistant coach for football.

With the blessings of two sweet girls Riley (4) & Stella (2), they had a wonderful family of 4. They let God take the lead and learned of the blessing of TWINS summer 2017. As a side note, Ruth’s beautiful mother Linda Handy is a identical twin.

Their first appointment at John Hopkins in Baltimore was in late October 2017, when they had their first laser ablation on October 31, 2017 to correct Twin to Twin transfusion syndrome. Within two weeks the Tapscott twins were diagnosed with TAPS and had to have a second laser ablation to fix the blood vessel that was left. Ruth was on bed rest for two weeks after each laser procedure (and worked a whopping total of 7 days in November). On December 1, 2017 Ruth was admitted to UVA because the boys were no longer in separate sacs and there was a high risk of cord entanglement. This family was a rock as they powered through the holiday season surrounded by Christmas carols and Christmas trees in the hospital and letting the girls do their Christmas shopping in the hospital gift shop. They are blessed with a great support system in their familes and every time I asked Ruth how she was doing..It was ALWAYS positive.

The boys were born on January 15, 2018  with the biggest blessing of no cord entanglement issues (one benefit of a controlled c section birth) and weighed less than an ounce different (a true testament to the amazing benefits of the laser ablation procedures).

Both had typical interventions of twins born at 34 weeks (scheduled due to risk of entanglement). Both were on cpap for a short period of time and then had to wean from isolettes to room air to maintain temperatures on their own. Their biggest obstacle was learning to feed but once the doctors and nurses agreed that bottles and fortified milk were not for them they were home free.

Tucker Hayden was born at 8:41 am and weighed 4 12.5 and Henry Hill was born at 8:43 am and weighed 4 12.2. They were sent to the nicu straight from delivery and were there for 16 days. They were blessed that their issues were minimal and we could bring them home after 16 days.

In closing this wonderful faithful family has had great care for Ruth and the boys at UVA and other specialists since October. With only one income due to bed rest it puts a stresser on a family of 6. I wanted to put together this page to help them get back to a new “normal” and be able to focus on a bright and wonderful future for the Tapscott 6!
