Tapestries Lakeland

Tapestries Lakeland is an Un-Mural Art Exhibition

60 mural sized painted tapestries are to be displayed in Lakeland on walls in the urban areas of Midtown, Downtown and Dixieland.  Forty two  professional  and student artists have spent hundreds of hours to paint them.

The Lakeland CRA, LDDA, the Citrus Connection and Broadway Real Estate Services have contributed $27,500 of the $38,000 needed.  We need $10,000 more to finish the project and hang them in our communities

Soon the labor, materials and equipment rental expense for attaching them to walls will hit us and we don't have the funds to accomplish the task.  Please be apart of this community building art project.

We need your help . . . We need additional corporate sponsorship . . . We need your individual support

My name is David Collins, most people don't know me by name but by the things I've done in the past.  I'm the guy who painted all the light poles in Downtown Lakeland first stretch wrapped and then painted.  I'm the guy that painted the giraffe on a stretch wrapped tree in Munn Park, or the guy that created Clearly People.

I've lived in Lakeland Florida since 1976, started painting in 2005, owned Paint Along Studios in downtown and have been creating Public Art in Lakeland since 2010.

I'm one of the creators and the organizer of Tapestries Lakeland.  The Working Artist Studio and Gallery, a gallery featuring contemporary artists, and that provides artists with studio space is owned by South Kentucky Avenue Property LLC. which is owned by me David Collins.

Two of the artists Ana Lopez, Aaron Corbitt and I first conceived the Tapestries Lakeland concept, I secured funding to buy the material necessary to produce sixty canvas tarps in six sizes, 5X5, 5X7, 7X9, 9X9, 9X11 and 5X13. and to pay $10.00 per square foot for forty of them to be painted by professional artists.  We were given $10,000 by both the Lakeland CRA and the Lakeland Downtown Development Authority.  $5000 was funded by the Citrus Connection and $2500.00 by Broadway Real Estate Services.  Total funding was $27,500.00

The 62 10oz. Cotton Duck tarpaulins with grommets installed every 18" to 24" to facilitate attaching them to exterior walls was purchased, along with the two part primer/sealer.  Casual labor was used to apply the  primer/sealer on both sides and a finish coat to the front before supplied to artists.  All artists including student and emerging artists were provided with prepared tapestries and exterior acrylic paint to paint their paintings

$4,800 has been spent on tarpaulins, sealer, paint and casual labor as of 9/20/2018.  Twenty two artists were paid $24,655 at $10 per sq,ft. and painted 38 of the largest tapestries. Seven tapestries were painted by professional artists who donated their time to paint of which I painted four.

Student artists also were encouraged to participate.  Four students from Harrison School for the Arts, four from Polk State and five from Florida Southern College are participating.

To date we have spent $29,455 and received $27,500.  As of 9/20/2018 we have spent $1,955 without funding.  Rest assured that every dime we collect will be spent wisely.

The funds we collect will be used to fund the $1,955 already spent, secure a and apply a clear finish coat to the top of all 60 tapestries which contains a U/V inhibitor to protect the Tapestries in the Florida Sun.   We also need to mount all of the tapestries on rods for the Artists reception, rent a scissor lift to hang them for the event as well as paying for the reception.  After the reception we will have to hire a contractor who has the proper tools, ladders or lift equipment and a trained work force to attach them to buildings as per code.

We have budgeted $6,000 for installation expenses. Our gofundme goal of $10,000 allows us to complete this project with $2000.00 for reception expenses.  250 people are expected to attend the artist reception.

South Kentucky Property LLC has collected and disbursed all funds.  It has also recruited the artists planned and organized the event as well as paying for social media costs. In addition the Working Artist Gallery was provided at no cost for artists to paint the tapestries because most artist don't have space in their studios or homes to hang canvases of this size.

I am acting as an "Art Instigator" or "Co Creator" with the City of Lakeland, my home town.  All monies received will be spent on this project.  I am willing to meet with any donor to discuss the way funds are being used and disbursed.   I can be reached locally at [phone redacted].
