Tamalpais High School Mock Trial Team Wins 2018 State Championship, Heads to National Competition as Team California!
On March 18, 2018, the Tamalpais High School Mock Trial Team (“THMT”)from Marin County won the 2018 California High School Mock Trial Championship. This was the first championship for THMT, a public school program, since its 2009 win and its third in history. Captains Ellie Allen and Elissa Asch led the team to a victory in a hard-fought round against Shasta High School from Shasta County. Asch also received recognition as Outstanding Pretrial Attorney.
THMT will now head to the National High School Mock Trial competition May 10-13 in Reno, Nevada. This will not be THMT’s first appearance at the national level. In 2005, in Charlotte, North Carolina, THMT won the National Championship—the only California team in the modern era of mock trial to do so. In 2009, in Atlanta, Georgia, THMT took home 6 th Place.
THMT is coached by criminal defense attorney and veteran mock trial coach David M. Vogelstein as well as alumni coaches Jack Budish (Class of 2011), Abigail Kertzman (Class of 2010), and Casey Khademi (Class of 2010). All four coaches are volunteers.
Those competing for THMT were seniors Ellie Allen, Elissa Asch, Ellie Evans, and Avi Perkoff; juniors Sydney Brown, Jake Glenn, Caroline Herdman, Mario Micklow, Celeste Moore, and Emily Spears; and sophomore Hana Curphey. Other team members include seniors Aaron Gloates and Lucy Silmore; juniors Ella Miller-Hodge and Zoe Portera; sophomores Talia Beyer, Devin Guinney, Ian Duncanson, Duncan Labeeuw-Anderson, Max Neeley, Marshall Sekula, Adam West, and Isabelle Winstead; and freshmen Marco Lizarraga, Jake McLaughlin, Adrienne Murr, Otto Ryersen, Oliver Silmore, Rachel Sulciner, and Brady Tatarksy.
The team relies solely on donations for its expenses - including transportation, hotels, registration fees, materials, etc. Please help us get to and WIN Nationals by donating to our team - we are grateful for anything that you can contribute!
