Cruel Consequences Project

Please help us find compelling stories that show the cruelty of the collateral consequences from criminal enforcement of prohibition in order to end marijuana prohibition.

Our goal is to feature at least one story from each of the United States in our awareness exhibit for collateral consequences of marijuana prohibition. We would like to represent the diverse collective body of personal stories from Americans who have suffered collateral consequences of marijuana convictions from all over the U.S.

Cruel Consequences: Portraits of Misguided Law is a portrait exhibit which aims to bring awareness to how collateral consequences of marijuana conviction are ruining lives in the U.S.  Often after all sentences and fees have been satisfied with a marijuana conviction, people will suffer consequences like loss of housing, loss of employment, denial of college loans, and denial of basic civil rights. The system does not set people on a path of reform, it sets them up for failure and incentivizes criminal activity.

We need funds to be able to hire free-lance photographers who reside near each person featured. Funds raised will also be used for photo printing and framing costs.

Each story is written from interviews and photography coordinated by the founder of CCPML, Tamara Netzel, who uses voice to text software on her computer to write because of hand dysfunction from her Multiple Sclerosis. Netzel has been a medical cannabis advocate since her Multiple Sclerosis symptoms took a turn for the worse when the prescribed drugs she was taking for her MS triggered her liver to go into failure. Netzel found cannabis to relieve her painful spasticity in her hands and arms after she was forced to retire early from her career as a teacher.

Netzel created Cruel Consequences: Portraits of Misguided Law when she heard how people suffer consequences like loss of housing and employment for even small marijuana possession charges. She felt these stories need to be told to help lawmakers see why marijuana prohibition needs to end.
